Magento Imagine 2016

What is Magento Enterprise Cloud?

Magento Enterprise Cloud Edition offers all the benefits of modern cloud computing: Elastic scalability, high resilience, PCI compliance, global availability and automated patching, while still maintaining the flexibility that merchants require.

Magento Enterprise Cloud infrastructure stack

Magento Enterprise Cloud should not be confused with the previous Magento Go offering that Magento tried before ultimately discontinuing the service.  Magento Go was a SaaS (Software as a Service) provision rather than a PaaS. The biggest key difference for merchants is the flexibility that is still provided in Magento Enterprise Cloud, which wasn’t present in Magento Go. With Magento Go, merchants sacrificed flexibility by subscribing to a core service that couldn’t really be customised to specific needs. A key requirement for the Enterprise customers and for Ampersands approach to service delivery.

Enterprise Cloud does not restrict merchants but does make infrastructure setup easier whilst also allowing development teams to quickly release features for review and deployment.

In our experience infrastructure setup and architecture is never a “plug and play” process, particularly when navigating AWS pricing models and global deployments. What is clear though, is that it is definitely a further step in the right direction for enterprise merchants.

What does it mean for Enterprise Merchants currently on Magento?

The short answer there is no immediate need to do anything.

However, if you are currently thinking about upgrading to Magento 2, the Enterprise Cloud announcement should give you confidence in the direction Magento are taking, whilst also understanding that it isn’t a one size fits all solution.
